I like the layout of monocle being uncluttered, minimalistic. As Jrim said, Japan has quite a "Cool Utopian" depiction in it. Which is a little detached from the passionate, vibrant experience I had with the Japanese culture. That said, if it is the theme of the publication, it is definitely a cool one :)
I also like the in-depth (and interesting) stories on places I otherwise would have neglected (like development of Khartoum by the middle-east).
Pity that down here in the south we receive every issue about a month after it is on sell somewhere else.
Well, one of their other Japan writers also writes for the Daily Telegraph... I find reading about Japan in Monocle a bit surreal - it's almost like they're describing an alternate universe, in which everything you wished was true about the country (genuinely all-pervasive Zen aesthetics, carefully thought-out design wherever you turn, civic policies that put the rest of the world to shame) actually is. Still, it's turned me on to more interesting stuff going on in my backyard than Metropolis has...

Mr Goodrich - the editor of the Asian section sounds very monotone, very intelligent i would imagine. Oxford or Cambridge i would guess.
Nice mag. Same people as Wallpaper magazine. Monocle is more interesting, with less adverts for things I will never be able to afford.

I've never bought a physical copy, but I often check out the online version.
